Re: Raising Children in the Church

This ^ I'm a little weird when it comes to this topic. On one hand, I don't see any benefit force-feeding something like faith to a child and, on the other hand, I'm all in favor of helping developing good habits from a young age. Like piano lessons, I eventually learned that the the thing I loathed...

Re: A Friendly Discussion of Catholicism

Also to draw this into a larger debate we've been having for quite awhile. Even saying that is an accurate quote, which I am not, has this been the teaching of the Catholic church since the beginning? In short, no, it is not. :) The teaching of the Catholic Church has always been something called &...

Re: What Not to Watch

I'm not sure why I didn't like "The Notebook", maybe because it felt a little too contrived? It reminded me of that Mandy Moore film "A Walk to Remember", where the whole plot seemed purposely engineered to try and get the audience to cry, so I totally didn't buy into it. :noway:...

Re: What Not to Watch

Aw man, why the hate for Life of Pi? :( I love that movie - even better in 3D and the allegorical twist to the story makes it interesting (to me). Anyway, this isn't a thread about movies we like, so: 1. Pearl Harbor 2. The Notebook (or really any highly acclaimed romantic drama with the notable exc...

Re: airline aggravation

If it's any consolation, my luggage is currently in Venezula. I was annoyed for, like, 2 minutes and then I bought some new clothes and used it as a presentation icebreaker the following morning. It's rare that I take a flight where there isn't some kind of delay, inconvenience or mixup. That's the ...

Re: First Year University Students

I remember the stifling heat in the dorms. Mind you, this was ..... yeesh, 10 years ago now? Yikes :( Anyway, we had boys and girls dorms and the boys had television, high speed internet and air conditioning. The girls' dorms had none of the above. It was quite the injustice. I remember wanting to s...

Brad, you look eerily like the British comedian David Mitchell. Tell me this isn't uncanny. ;)

Edit: Jonathan, you're making me miss Minnesota with that photo! (Perish the thought)

I think I'm only actually subscribed to the Piano Guys and the Sruti Box (Shankar Tucker). Most of you probably recognize Piano Guys, but I'd highly recommend Shankar Tucker's music as a really beautiful example of clarinet composition and classical fusion.

I got a 100% yesterday on my first of two finals in my Software Engineering class at the joint-vocational school I attend. :D The second one is in 2 hours. Hopefully I can do almost as well on that one. Oh yuck man, software engineering..... really? I'm sorry. :P In other news, I'm moving to New Je...

I've probably changed a lot since I first joined the AIO community/world in '99. Maybe not as much as the rest of you crazy, liberal hippie types, but still.... ;) I'm not on the computer in my spare time. When I get home I generally want to knit or read or go outside. I have to consciously make an ...

<r>There's a quote out there dubiously credited to Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) that says something along the lines of: <br/> <br/> "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind." <br/> <br/> I'm naturally an introvert too, but change comes...

Re: job hunting

In what industry are you looking for a job? I think that matters in how serious they are about the on-the-job experience. For example, in law I found that they tend to be pretty stringent about requiring actual, working experience, which makes sense because what you learn in school has little to no ...

Re: racist writing assignment

<t>Here's my take on it: <br/> <br/> It's a good idea to teach rhetorical skills. Being forced to argue from the viewpoint of your opponent forces you to frame your arguments differently and to find logical evidence to support your assertions. That said, most rhetorical exercises take fundamentally ...

Re: Girls wearing guy pants/jeans

At the risk of sounding all hipster, as a matter of personal taste I really don't like any form of jeans on either gender - skirts, pants, shorts or otherwise. I guess they've always sort of struck me as outdoor/chore clothes and not really normal clothing, but that's just my natural bias playing th...

Re: BBC's "Sherlock" Series

I just saw the "Sherlock" star pop up in an episode of MI-5 the other day. Granted, it may have pre-dated the "Sherlock" series, as I think the MI-5 series goes back to 1999 or so...

Still, it was pretty cool. \:D/
