Good morning Church,

What a great day to be alive. Any day with Jesus as Lord is a great day and we rejoice in his goodness for he is good all the time. Today is the day the Lord has made, so let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Peter and John were brave, bold and were not backing down for anyone. They were arrested and were now being questioned by the same group that had manipulated the killing of Jesus. These were the same disciples who had hidden themselves away behind a locked door, in fear that they would be found out. Now here they were, boldly healing crippled men, teaching in the Temple and staring down the Sanhedrin. It was quite the change.

We don’t expect a lot of change any more from people when they accept Jesus. Oh, we expect them to change their behaviour but not their character and personality. We expect that they will be happier, gentler, not be so much trouble but that’s about it. Again this is the reason I think we have more conformity than salvation in the Church. True salvation introduces the Holy Spirit as well and the Holy Spirit transforms us. Take note of what the powerful Sanhedrin noticed:

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. (Acts 4:13)

It is wonderful that neither Peter nor John were given credit for whom or what they had become. “They took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Jesus receives all the glory for this. Perhaps the leadership had intended it as a bad thing but we see nothing but good in this.

Peter and John had also become men of integrity and uncompromising servants of the Lord. There is nothing in scripture that gives us the right to enter into rebellion with the government. Where we can get the government to agree to our freedoms in Christ it is great. However, there are times when the government may want to restrict what has been given to us to do in the name of Jesus Christ. In those moments we must respectfully declare our purpose. Look at how direct and clear Peter and John were when they were told not to give instruction any more in the name of Jesus:

Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." (Acts 4:18-20)

In the end the Sanhedrin was left with nothing to do but release the disciples. The work of Jesus Christ spoke for itself. The once crippled man stood in front of them, healed. How could they argue with that? If we are true to our calling, allowing the glory and work of Jesus to shine through us, then the work of Jesus Christ will speak for itself. No one will be able to touch us or stop us, if we continue without compromise.

We are all possessed by this same Spirit who emboldened Peter and John. This Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus Christ fills everyone who is truly saved, yet we act as if we are alone. What a silly lot of people we are. Let us go out and do our works of kindness today, impacting our little corner of the world for Jesus Christ and let us do it in the power of the Holy Spirit, expecting miracles and great things around every corner. God is great! God is good!
