Bible Reading: Colossians 3

Good morning my friends,

Wow! It is like an avalanche this morning. Perhaps you read these words as you have so many times before, quickly and without much thought. We have a habit of making our Bible reading a habit instead of an exploration of God's heart. Read the words carefully; savor them on your palate before allowing them to go in. Seek out a better understanding of the words so they become more than words.

Consider just a few of the instructions:

"... set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right
hand of God."

I wonder if we were to take a journey to see where our hearts are focused what it would reveal to us.

"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."

I am not convinced that we even know what this means any more. We are desperate (without even realizing we are desperate) for a deep spiritual awakening where our perspective, knowledge and understanding of that knowledge would be made right again.

"For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God."

Did we? Did we die? If we did what is all our complaining about? What is all our fear about? What are our worries and our stress? If we died what do the things of this earth have to do with us? "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." There has to be more to it than what we have turned it into. There has to be!

Until we get a grip on these very basic tenets of the Kingdom what follows will remain as words to us:

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."

These are great sounding ideas; ideals even. Yet, these are the facts concerning those who belong to Christ Jesus. The only way to get there is by death because our old nature must be separated from us and that only happens by death. We can't "bear" with each other if we are still alive to our feelings of self-importance. If we are offended easily it is because we are still alive to ourselves. The problem is that we want to take a short cut to obtain the good stuff, but there is no short cut. We can only enter in via the gate, the death on the cross, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Read this and understand it describes what can be ours when we are alive in Jesus instead of ourselves. Read and understand it is no ideal but a fact of the Kingdom:

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Let us reflect well on this today and let us decide what should be of importance to us today. We must start at the beginning.
