CA wasn't, they were under spanish rule from the time of their settlement in 1697-1821, and Mexican rule from 1821-1846, when they became a U.S. territory. As for HI, though, I'm afraid you're right.

They are called commentwealths, but commenwealths are still states. Just like Rhode Island is actually called Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, it's a state, not a plantation.

Actually, CA was for about a month $\:D/$

And yeah, I meant to add the thing about commonwealths on. They are still considered states, though they don't really refer to themselves that way - if that makes sense.

Right, commonwealth is a descriptive term used by the state to acknowledge its roots. In this context, common means "of the people", and wealth means "general welfare". In other words, a commonwealth is a state whose basis for government (in these cases, statehood) was based on the wishes of the people therein, and not decided by an external ruling body (e.g. Great Britain.) Using the term commonwealth to describe one's self has no effect upon statehood (if it did, then we might have a different president right now.

Sorry KBT, it's not the Cascades. It's the Sawtooth Range, in Central Idaho.
