How many states were their own countries before joining the union and what are they?

Also how many states are there in the USA?

Nope!

California, and Hawaii were also their own countries and from my research possibly Vermont as well...

Nope!

46 - Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Kentucky are commonwealths not states! \:D/

CA wasn't, they were under spanish rule from the time of their settlement in 1697-1821, and Mexican rule from 1821-1846, when they became a U.S. territory. As for HI, though, I'm afraid you're right.

They are called commentwealths, but commenwealths are still states. Just like Rhode Island is actually called Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, it's a state, not a plantation.

Actually, CA was for about a month \:D/

And yeah, I meant to add the thing about commonwealths on. They are still considered states, though they don't really refer to themselves that way - if that makes sense.

Also, after the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the original 13 colonies (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and New York) were all formally independent countries until the adoption of the Articles of Confederation in 1781 united them together into a federation known as the United States of America.

Right, commonwealth is a descriptive term used by the state to acknowledge its roots. In this context, common means "of the people", and wealth means "general welfare". In other words, a commonwealth is a state whose basis for government (in these cases, statehood) was based on the wishes of the people therein, and not decided by an external ruling body (e.g. Great Britain.) Using the term commonwealth to describe one's self has no effect upon statehood (if it did, then we might have a different president right now. ;) )

The Bear Flag Republic did declare itself independent, but only consisted of 33 men and never actually became a formal entity.

Nope. Sante Fe, New Mexico. it was a capital even before it joined the United States, making it the longest capital in the country.

Sorry KBT, it's not the Cascades. It's the Sawtooth Range, in Central Idaho.
