Edit:

Unless you’re referring to only your proposal where a winner is forced. But that’s not going to happen. There is no winning team in a tie, I’m not going to arbitrarily declare one just for tally purposes when there’s not a need to.
Let me show you what I mean. This would be my pick:

Green Bay at Detroit - TIE

And then if the game ends in a tie, I get a point and the players who picked either team to win would get nothing. Do you agree?

But who would do that because ties are so rare? You would almost be guaranteeing a missed point.

I do agree, and from now on if someone wanted to take the huge risk of doing that then I will indeed score it if correct. But for those who picked either team, it still gets dropped either way, so it still doesn’t matter there.

This Rule Rebuke courtesy of league attempts to introduce contextless catchalls in the name of player safety when such a thing is simply not possible.

We know that these days if the helmet of the ball carrier comes off at any time during the play, the play is immediately dead where it occurred. (Unless he removed it himself, which is an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.) I completely understand and agree with the idea behind the rule, but I can’t disagree more with the rule itself. The problem is that all plays are not equal. The purpose of the rule is so the guy isn’t running around without a helmet and prone to serious injury if tackled. That’s good. But the way to prevent that is not to say that every play, no matter the circumstances, is instantly over.

A perfect example of why this doesn’t work was showcased in the Thanksgiving Steelers/Ravens game. The Steelers were at the goal line and decided to try to punch the ball in. Their runner did make it, but his helmet flew off at the end of the play prompting a review. Sure enough, the helmet was off his head just before the ball crossed the end zone. By rule, the play is over at the half yard line, and it was correctly called as such.

Clearly, while this is proper enforcement of the letter of the rule, it is completely against the spirit of the rule. The player was already hit and going down when his helmet came off. There was absolutely nothing to be accomplished by backing him up six inches and calling it dead there. The point of the rule is to prevent the player from attempting to continue advancing the ball and risk getting hit. That doesn’t apply here at all! He was already hit, the play was already going to be dead, the only thing this affected was the end location of the football. He was already going to be down, no one was going to be hitting him further, the rule was absolutely useless in this situation.

He was falling across the goal line. This play is over two different ways. First, because it’s a touchdown! As soon as the ball crosses the plane the play is dead. Second, because even if he didn’t cross the line, he was down! Someone hitting him would be discouraged without the helmet rule because it would be a late hit penalty.

The intent of the rule is right, but saying that to enforce that intent means we drop common sense is ridiculous. This isn’t an either/or situation. You can protect the player and not end plays unnecessarily. It’s simple. If a helmet comes off the player can’t actively continue the play, but if he is already in the process of falling forward or going down, let play continue to the ground. Calling a play that would already be over a second later anyway dead a second sooner adds no extra protection, it’s just dumb. And in cases like the game in question, it actually punishes the player it’s supposed to protect.

I never considered what would happen if the helmet pops off at the goalline, so I don't blame the rulemakers for that oversight. Their intention was to protect players. Hopefully it gets amended in the offseason.

I haven't sent money to anyone. When informed I'll send money for all weeks I've played.

I've sent money to Ryder for like the last 10 weeks. I wonder if I'll ever get that money back. :-k

At this point, I care more about the cumulative pool than the weekly.

FYI, if you’re not paying you’re not playing. Ryder will likely not count your picks for those weeks when he returns to score. You need to send in your money each week.

Note is was hearing a game on radio and seeing one on TV they had not yet kicked off. I would like to say Seattle will win as well.
