Perhaps it's because, deep down inside, AE just has this indefatigable happiness and joy, and he can't help but try to spread that joy through the sometimes excessive use of smilies. Do you really think that's something we should be trying to take away from him? No. :)

Yes, I believe Pip is right. We are all called as Christians to express our joy to other people. Should we strip that joy of others- that is when we are beaten. You are a very sinful man to try to protest this :x
