13: It All Started When...

Postby Catspaw » Sun Aug 24, 2008 1:13 pm

Use this thread to comment on the information regarding the thirteenth album of Adventures in Odyssey! \:D/ This section starts on page 171.

Page 175 – “BTS: An Act of Nobility” – I always wondered where the country’s name (Muldavia) came from – now I know! I’ve never heard of the novel that the episode was inspired by. I might eventually check to see if I can find it in the library or something. If I do, I’ll be sure to pass on what I thought! Maybe somebody else has already read it and can enlighten the rest of us.

Not a lot to comment on in this chapter but if I may tell a story. . .

It all started at the December 2005 chapel at Focus on the Family. . .

I wasn't yet a volunteer but my Mom works at the Focus on the Family Bookstore and I went up to meet Dr. Dobson after chapel was over. I asked him if he remembered making the episode "Dobson Comes to Town". He didn't have much recollection of it. I told him that the episode would be coming out on the new Gold Audio series that Odyssey was creating with the episode "Dobson Comes to Town". Of course when it came out a few months later of course I had to buy it!

In March of 2006 I became a volunteer at Focus on the Family. Every year there is a volunteer luncheon around the month of August where you have lunch with several volunteers and have a Q&A time with Dr. Dobson and several other "Big Wigs" at Focus on the Family. In August of 2006 I got to go up in Dr. Dobson's Office, which was a landmark event that made me cry. In August of 2007 I asked if he was planning on visiting Odyssey anytime soon. Of course the Odyssey he thought I was talking about was the Odyssey at the Focus on the Family welcome center, I was referring to the radio program. For the first Odyssey he said that he would have to ask Mrs. Dobson if he could go back there but that the last time he was there there were a ton of photographers waiting for him when he went down the slide there. When he was addressing the part of the Odyssey I was referring to he said that he hadn't been invited but that he isn't an actor so he doubts he will ever go back.

So that's my story

In regards to "An Act of Nobility" I did ask Nathan Hoobler one time if James Armor could be Whit but I didn't really understand his response. It would be curious to find out if James Armor is Whit but I don't see how it would fit in Whit's biography. Also I agree with what Catpsaw says: if you find anything about the book "The Prisoner of Zenda" I would love to read a cliff notes version about what you have to say about that book.
I'm finally not a No0b

Well the guy's initials are J.A. just like Whit's an Whit had the watch sooo...I think it's entirely possible.

Also, the Prisoner of Zenda is on Amazon...

I agree with Sarah here - for years and years I wondered if it was really about Whit or not, and the older I get, the more that I think that it is. The fun part is that every listener gets to decide for themself! We don't all have to agree, because I think it was intentionally written so as to leave room for the imagination to play a role. (I've been wrong before, so who knows, but that's my take!)

Thanks for sharing your stories about meeting Dr. Dobson, Amy - I'm sure that was quite the honour! :)

Perhaps I'm just ridiculously naive or something, but I never questioned it... I've always assumed it was Whit.

It would've made the entire episode significantly less poignant had it not been Whit. :noway:

How neat about starting each episode with the phrase "It all started..."! I never picked up on that before, but I can see it now... and will listen for them. I guess I never quite realized how much narration was in this album.

I didn't realize Jerry Houser (Mr. Morton) appeared so early in Odyssey-land - he's had quite the long history with the show!

I knew about all the "old kids" in "The Conscientious Cross-Guard," but not all the crew members - how neat!

Great pictures with Dr. Dobson on pages 176 and 177!

"Dr. Dobson Comes to Town" was a fun episode to hear for the first time when the Gold Audio version came out... and it's fun hearing behind-the-scenes tidbits about it.

"An Act of Nobility"! :inlove: That scene at the end is one of my favorite scenes ever! Well okay, maybe not ever, but it's certainly (what I call) a "rewind and re-listen" scene. \:D/ I particularly like the music that starts to build when Isaac says, "It's just too bad stories like that aren't real"... culminating with the watch's glorious melody. I love how they didn't come right out and say that James Armor was Whit (though in my mind he pretty much always was), though sometimes I really wanted someone to confirm that he was, really and truly, Whit.
I love the \:D/ smiley
