Horse Racing 2015

If there's something on your mind that just doesn't seem to fall into any of the other categories, well, it quite likely belongs inside Joe Finneman's marketplace. Think of it as a general store for general discussions!

The Kentucky Derby is tomorrow! Who else is looking forward to it?

(I decided it was better to have a new thread for the new year's races rather than discussing every year in one thread like we had in the past. This way people can see what parts of the discussion are current and such.)

Yeah American Pharoah!

I was really excited about this after seeing Bob Baffert had not only the favorite - but the two top favorites! And he finally got it! \:D/

I decided to drop by the Chatroom for a viewing party. I was the only one watching but it was still fun.

[15:00] <Moontide> Hello bookworm
[15:00] <bookworm> Hi!
[15:00] <bookworm> Anyone watching the Kentucky Derby?
[15:00] <bookworm> The walkover just started.
[15:01] <Jeremiah> Not I
[15:02] <bookworm> Why not? It only takes a minute and a half ;)
[15:04] <Moontide> Can it be seen online?
[15:04] <bookworm> Hmm I'm not sure
[15:04] <bookworm> Worth checking, NBC likes to stream stuff
[15:05] <Moontide> They seem to be.
[15:05] <bookworm> I always root for Bob Baffert's horses, which should turn out well this year - he has the *two* top favorites!
[15:06] <Moontide> Bleh, It requires a sign up.
[15:06] <bookworm> Darn
[15:07] <Moontide> It claims to be free, but I don't care that much.
[15:07] <bookworm> I can let you know what happens
[15:09] <Moontide> Do that.
[15:09] <Moontide> I don't know much about horse racing but I would be interesting in knowing who wins.
[15:10] <bookworm> Baffert's are American Pharoah at 3-1 and Dortmund at 4-1
[15:11] <bookworm> People are already super hyped over American Pharoah, saying he is Triple Crown potential
[15:12] <bookworm> Which is ridiculous before the Derby is even run
[15:12] <bookworm> But that shows how huge this is this year
[15:12] <bookworm> And Dortmund is undefeated, so he's expected to make a good run
[15:13] <Moontide> Those numbers are the betting ratios?
[15:13] <Moontide> or something else?
[15:13] <bookworm> Those are their current odds
[15:13] <bookworm> Based on bets, I believe, yes
[15:14] <bookworm> I don't understand what they mean I just know they are the two top
[15:14] <Moontide> So that American Pharoah should have a 1/4 chance of winning?
[15:14] <bookworm> Not sure. That's how I would interpret it; but I don't know it is correct
[15:19] <bookworm> Hmm, interesting. Dortmund was saddled in the tunnel instead of with all the others. That's unusual
[15:19] <bookworm> The jockeys are being introduced now.
[15:21] <bookworm> Wow! American Pharoah has won his last four races by an average of five and a half lengths! No wonder he's the favorite!
[15:22] <Moontide> Do the jockeys really matter that much?
[15:23] <bookworm> You wouldn't think so, but actually yes they are an important factor.
[15:23] <bookworm> I don't know why but some are just better. Knowledge and experience of how to feel out the race or something
[15:25] <bookworm> Victor Espenoza is on American Pharoah today; he won last year
[15:25] <bookworm> More good news for Bob Baffert! :)
[15:25] <Moontide> I expect that American Pharoah will win today.
[15:26] <bookworm> I hope so! With Dortmund second would be awesome
[15:26] <bookworm> Vikings QB Bridgewater gives the 'Riders up'
[15:26] <Moontide> What does that mean?
[15:27] <bookworm> It's like 'start your engines' for NASCAR; some celebrity comes out and says 'Riders up!' And the jockeys get on the horses
[15:27] <bookworm> That's all :p
[15:27] <bookworm> Call to post!
[15:28] <Moontide> Then they should be starting soon
[15:28] <Moontide> :)
[15:28] <bookworm> Yes!
[15:28] <bookworm> Playing My Old Kentucky Home now
[15:29] <bookworm> Horses are being led to the gate
[15:29] <Moontide> Do they play the entire My Old Kentucky Home?
[15:29] <Moontide> The youtube version is 5 minutes long.
[15:30] <bookworm> I'm not familiar with the song, but I don't think so
[15:30] <bookworm> It didn't take too long
[15:30] <bookworm> Over now
[15:31] <Moontide> Then it must not be the full version
[15:31] <bookworm> 18 horses racing today I believe
[15:31] <bookworm> That seems like a lot
[15:32] <bookworm> But I don't know what is average here
[15:36] <Moontide> Is where hats part of Kentucky derby tradition?
[15:37] <bookworm> Yes, fancy hats
[15:37] <bookworm> Mandatory
[15:37] <Moontide> (Watching youtubes of previous races)
[15:37] <bookworm> Ah
[15:39] <bookworm> Bob Costas doing the final scene setting
[15:39] <bookworm> =o American Pharoah went down at the last minute!
[15:39] <bookworm> Now 5/2
[15:40] <bookworm> Still the top favorite though
[15:40] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> went down?
[15:40] <bookworm> His odds
[15:40] <bookworm> Not physically ;)
[15:41] <Moontide> Do you see a reason?
[15:41] <bookworm> Final betters went with other horses I guess
[15:42] <bookworm> Horses are being put in the starting gate!...
[15:42] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> how do people betting on horses change the odds of them winning?
[15:42] <Moontide> Because they are betting prices as well
[15:42] <Moontide> If this is like other better.
[15:42] <bookworm> AND THEY'RE OFF!
[15:45] <bookworm> YEAH!!!
[15:45] <Moontide> What happened?
[15:45] <bookworm> American Pharoah wins the Derby!
[15:45] <Moontide> As was expected.
[15:45] <Moontide> Now what happens?
[15:46] <bookworm> Firing Line runner up, Dortmund third
[15:46] <bookworm> I'm really happy for Bob!
[15:46] Penguin feels the excitement rolling off bookworm
[15:46] <bookworm> I am man! I've been rooting for Baffert for years but he's had bad luck for a while
[15:47] <bookworm> @Moontide it was expected, but actually the favorite hasn't often won recently if memory serves me
[15:48] <Moontide> That is also expected.
[15:48] <bookworm> Victor Espenoza wins his second consecutive Derby! Jockies are indeed important :)
[15:49] <Moontide> Because if his chances were 2/7 then it is more likely that he won't win than win.
[15:49] <Moontide> but he is still more likely to win than any other horse.
[15:49] <bookworm> I don't know if those are actually the winning odds, they're betting odds
[15:50] <bookworm> They have something to do with the payout
[15:50] <bookworm> I don't understand it
[15:50] <Moontide> betting odds are winning odds are closely related.
[15:50] <Moontide> It makes it so that betting for a horse unlikely to win will payout more if it does win.
[15:50] <bookworm> Yes
[15:50] <Moontide> That way some people will bet that way.
[15:50] <bookworm> Right
[15:51] <bookworm> I get the idea, just not what the exact numbers mean
[15:51] <Moontide> I think, emphasizing the think, <chance of loss>:<chance of win>
[15:51] <bookworm> This is great, I can finally continue rooting for Bob Baffert in the other races!
[15:52] <bookworm> I used to change to cheering the Derby winner because I want to see a Triple Crown. Now he is the Derby winner! :D
[15:53] <bookworm> I hope he goes all the way that would be amazing!
[15:53] <Moontide> That would be amazing.
[15:54] <bookworm> Almost finally had it last year, a horse won the first two but couldn't finish
[15:57] <bookworm> Well I'll be going now; just wanted to drop by and share my excitement
[15:57] <bookworm> ;)
[15:57] <Moontide> Bye!

Just a few hours until Preakness post time! Come on American Pharoah! I am so exited!

I plan to be live chatting the race again; come on by the Chatroom whether you're watching or not to share the experience! It's too brief an event to warrant its own channel I think so it will probably just be in #aio :)

AMERICAN PHAROAH AAAHH!!! *dies*

For the second year in a row the Triple Crown can be claimed at the Belmont!

Chat Transcript:

[15:08] <bookworm> Horses have been saddled, jockeys are preparing to mount
[15:08] <snubs> HELLO
[15:09] <bookworm> I'm so excited - Bob Baffert has been in this position three times (having a Derby winner in the Preakness) and has won all three!

[15:11] <bookworm> Singing of Maryland My Maryland
[15:11] <bookworm> I have never seen a race in such intense rain
[15:12] <bookworm> Hope it doesn't cause problems
[15:14] <bookworm> Baffert also has Dortmund again, and he (Baffert) has won two Preaknesses with defeated Derby horses
[15:14] <bookworm> Uh oh...
[15:14] <bookworm> They're clearing the infield because of thunder....
[15:14] <bookworm> Still plan to race though, at the moment
[15:15] <bookworm> As long as there's no lightning
[15:15] Topic changed by snubs to: Welcome to the Town of Odyssey Chatroom! bookworm is really excited. o.o
[15:16] <bookworm> Yes I am!
[15:16] <snubs> hopefully the horses will be okay.
[15:16] <bookworm> This is the most into horseracing you can be; your favorite trainer chasing the Triple Crown
[15:17] <bookworm> It's like cheering on a team
[15:17] <bookworm> It is actually
[15:17] <bookworm> Just a little different than other sports
[15:19] <bookworm> Tom Hammond just said American Pharoah actually prefers soggy tacks apparently, so more good news!
[15:19] <bookworm> This rain is insane though
[15:20] LIGHTNING joined #aio
[15:21] <LIGHTNING> Sup?

[15:24] <bookworm> That was amazing!
[15:24] <bookworm> The best win I have ever seen in a horse race!
[15:24] <OxR> :P
[15:25] <bookworm> By something like five lengths!!
[15:25] <OxR> :O
[15:25] <LIGHTNING> OH!
[15:25] <LIGHTNING> A race is it? Epic I am sure! :D
[15:25] <bookworm> It was! You need to look up a replay of this when it's released!
[15:26] <bookworm> Best race I have EVER seen!
[15:26] <LIGHTNING> I will try to remember! :D
[15:26] <LIGHTNING> Wow, that good? I take it you have seen a few...
[15:27] <bookworm> I've watched the three jewel races every year for as long as I can remember, so yeah
[15:31] <bookworm> I should clarify
[15:31] <bookworm> This was not actually the best RACE I have seen, because it was not a race; it was never in question who would win
[15:31] <OxR> 0_o It was rigged?
[15:32] <bookworm> I meant this was the best performance by a horse I have seen
[15:32] <bookworm> Total domination
[15:32] <bookworm> Not rigged he's just that good!!
[15:33] <LIGHTNING> What were the odds?
[15:33] <bookworm> I have seen some great races; photo finishes, horses coming from all the way in the back to win
[15:33] <bookworm> I've never seen a horse just bolt out in front and pull away like this
[15:34] <bookworm> His final odds were 4/5
[15:39] <bookworm> Okay, I should go. Yeah American Pharoah!!
[15:39] <OxR> Bye.
[15:40] <bookworm> Be back for the Belmont! History on the line!
[15:41] <LIGHTNING> Eh?
[15:41] <bookworm> He can win the Triple Crown!
[15:41] <OxR> YAY!
[15:41] <LIGHTNING> yay
[15:41] <bookworm> YAY!!!!
[15:41] <LIGHTNING> who what
[15:41] * snubs waves
[15:42] <LIGHTNING> What is a, oh, never mind, cya!
[15:42] <LIGHTNING> :D
[15:42] <bookworm> I'll explain next time. Or look it up ;)

IT HAS FINALLY HAPPENED!

I am so happy about this I can't even describe it! It's one thing to have finally seen this historic achievement, regardless of the horse, but having it be this horse, one from the trainer I have always rooted for, it makes it personal to me. Everyone is excited about this in general because history has been made, but I am excited in an even deeper way because of who made it.

Bob Baffert is a legendary trainer (he already was before this, but now he indisputably is!) and a good guy. I am truly thrilled for him. And he actually almost got here before but lost it on a photo finish, the narrowest Triple Crown loss ever. So he deserved this.

Chat transcript:
[15:27] <bookworm> It's almost time for the Belmont! I am *so* excited about this you can't even understand!
[15:27] <bookworm> I was excited about last year's Belmont simply for the possibility of seeing history, independent of the horse that was going for it. But this year my trainer of choice could actually be the one that makes history! That's as great as it can get!
[15:28] OxR blinks
[15:28] <bookworm> This is Bob Baffert's fourth attempt at a Triple Crown; I want him to get it so much!
[15:28] <OxR> You get excited easily, don't you bookworm? :P
[15:29] <bookworm> This isn't easy excitement, this is history!
[15:29] <bookworm> Everyone should be excited about this!
[15:29] <bookworm> American Pharoah has the jockey that rode California Chrome last year in his Triple Crown attempt, so he's experienced this before. Hopefully he learned things that will help him get the win this time!
[15:29] <bookworm> Baffert is the first trainer to have a fourth Triple Crown attempt and Espenoza is the first jockey to have a third.
[15:29] <bookworm> And American Pharoah is undefeated since Espenoza has been his jockey. On a 6 race winning streak; which interestingly is exactly the same situation he was in going into last year's attempt.
[15:30] Countess is confused
[15:30] <OxR> Bookworm is just going to talk to himself for a while....just let him be....
[15:30] <bookworm> The first Triple Crown in 37 years might be won in a few minutes!
[15:31] <bookworm> Do you really not understand how huge this is?
[15:31] <bookworm> Even if you don't care about horse racing itself, this moment should still mean something to you simply for being historic!
[15:31] <OxR> Sorry, I don't really care about much....
[15:32] <Countess> I was taken back to the days in Egypt, and then America, and horse racing and now England's crown. I AM SO CONFUSED
[15:32] <bookworm> Apparently not, but you should I'm saying.
[15:32] Lacey saw a bunch of horses today
[15:32] <Countess> Congrats Lacey
[15:35] <bookworm> "Riders up!"
[15:36] Portable_Wes likes riding horses. But doesn't care much for other things like that
[15:37] <bookworm> Call to post!
[15:38] <bookworm> Singing of New York, New York
[15:46] <OxR> Time to eat supper.
[15:46] <OxR> Good luck with your horse-race watching, Bookworm.
[15:46] OxR quit
[15:51] <bookworm> Entering the gate!
[15:52] <bookworm> THEY'RE OFF!!!
[15:53] <Penguin> How many horses are racing?
[15:54] <Portable_Wes> 103
[15:54] <Portable_Wes> Cramped track
[15:55] <bookworm> YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
[15:55] <bookworm> IT HAS FINALLY HAPPENED
[15:56] Dan_in_Trank_Tank returns
[15:56] <bookworm> AAAAAHHHH I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!
[15:57] <SWA> 37 years right?
[15:57] <bookworm> Yes!
[15:57] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> congratulations
[15:57] Dan_in_Trank_Tank holds his sarcasm
[15:58] <SWA> Was Secretariat the last one?
[15:58] <bookworm> No, Affirmed was
[15:58] <SWA> Basically Secretariat is all I know about horse racing
[15:58] Connie joined #aio
[15:58] <Connie> AMERICAN PHAROAH WON THE TRIPLE CROWN!~
[15:58] <bookworm> Oh my goodness, I cannot believe this feeling!
[15:58] <Connie> FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 37 YEARS
[15:58] <bookworm> I am so happy!
[15:59] <Queen_Xenomorph> I am confused
[15:59] <Queen_Xenomorph> What are you talking about, bookworm?
[15:59] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> Caitie: a horse won a race
[15:59] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> winning three certain races that for some reason is special
[15:59] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> and hasn't been done in 40 years
[15:59] <bookworm> Because only 12 have ever done it
[15:59] <bookworm> Ever
[16:01] <bookworm> This is the greatest moment you can have watching horse racing! I didn't know if I would ever see this happen period; forget the possibility of having the trainer I root for be the one! This is incredible!
[16:02] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> why?
[16:03] <bookworm> Why is this incredible? Really?
[16:04] <bookworm> Because this is the equivalent of your chosen team winning their sports championship, which would be great enough, but in this case the championship is nearly impossible to win. It's not like the Super Bowl where someone wins it every year, and maybe your team is the one.
[16:05] <bookworm> This is, first of all, will *anyone* win it in the first place? Then will it happen to be your team
[16:05] <Queen_Xenomorph> Yuck. I hate horses. xD
[16:05] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> why?
[16:05] <Queen_Xenomorph> I have had my foot stepped on by one of those annoying creatures and I forever dislike them now >=[
[16:05] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> :o
[16:05] <TheStepHaty> Well I will bet your siblings have stepped on your foot and you don't forever dislike /them/.
[16:05] <TheStepHaty> My aunt said the same thing.
[16:05] <TheStepHaty> And it was the same jockey too! the same one that lost last year, I bet he is happy now!
[16:05] <TheStepHaty> It's like winning three super bowls within a month, in a row.
[16:07] TheStepHaty highfives bookworm happily
[16:07] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> still not worth crying over
[16:08] <bookworm> This was the 147th running of the Belmont. Only a *handful* of horses in that time have had a chance at the Triple Crown; of those only *12* have managed to win it
[16:08] <TheStepHaty> I'm not crying....
[16:08] <Queen_Xenomorph> STEPHAT, MY SIBLINGS DO NOT WEIGH AS MUCH AS A HORSE DOES. #Laggy
[16:08] <TheStepHaty>
[16:08] <bookworm> So 8 percent have won?
[16:08] <bookworm> Yeah kind of a big deal
[16:08] <Dan_in_Trank_Tank> if you say so
[16:08] <TheStepHaty> And think of the odds of it being same jockey
[16:09] <TheStepHaty> he he. odds. horse race.
[16:09] TheStepHaty laughs at her own not funny joke
[16:11] Topic changed by Dan_in_Trank_Tank to: Welcome to the Town of Odyssey Chatroom! A horse won three crowns. Celebrate.
[16:11] bookworm celebrates!
[16:14] <bookworm> Trophy presentation!
[16:15] <TheStepHat__Away> YES Tea_Ess AMERICAN PHAROAH WON THE TRIPLE CROWN
[16:15] TheStepHat__Away celebrates on her way to a Symphony in the Park
[16:16] <bookworm> There it is! Wow.
[16:17] <bookworm> I am *so* happy for Bob, this is wonderful.
[16:17] <Queen_Xenomorph> How rare is it for a team to win the Triple Crown?
[16:18] <bookworm> Well as I said only a few horses have had a chance at it in about 147 races; of those only 12 have won it; so about an 8 percent win rate.
[16:18] <bookworm> Rare.
People that don't get why this is a big deal just don't understand what happened. Even if you don't care about the sport, it should be clear why this event is significant.

There is nothing you can compare the Triple Crown to for an analogy. You would want to equate it to the Super Bowl or World Series because it's the top achievement of the sport, but it's not like those at all because those happen every year. Someone is going to win it, it's a big deal, but it's not on the same historic scale at all.

This isn't something that is attempted every year, you have to have great success just to get the ability to try for this. There have only been a handful of horses that have ever even had a chance to attempt winning a Triple Crown, nevermind managing to succeed!
The number that people keep throwing around is how it hadn't been won in 37 years, and yes that shows how hard it is, but what shows how astoundingly rare it is are the all inclusive numbers.

Racing for a Triple Crown has been possibile since 1875, exactly 140 years ago, except two years where two of the races were run the same day. That means 138 horses have won the first race and had the potential to continue pursuing a Triple Crown. Of those only 34 managed to win the second race and be in position to attempt it and 31 of them ran in the final race to actually have a chance of winning. And of those only 12 have ever succeeded.
So only 8% of potential Triple Crown bids have been successful. That's pretty rare.
But there's another way to look at it that perhaps makes it even more remarkable. You don't have to get into the math, just look at the context.
These races are held once a year. So if we've only had this few since 1875, that means there have only been 12 winners in 140 years!

Let those numbers sink in, then tell me you don't understand why this is a big deal.

I don't follow horse racing, but I do understand just how monumental this is. I, unfortunately, was unable to watch as I had committed to helping out at a church event during the race, but I just watched the replay. WOW. That was exciting, even knowing the outcome. And yes, I did scream when I found out American Pharoah won. \:D/

It's not until October; there are a series of "Win and You're In" races to earn runs in it first.

Tomorrow, American Pharoah will run to secure a legacy as the unquestioned single greatest racehorse in history in his final race, the Breeder's Cup Classic. If he wins he will be the only horse ever to win this prestigious race in addition to a Triple Crown.

If you are a horse racing fan this event is a must watch as the opportunity to possibly see even more history made, and to bittersweetly say farewell to this remarkable horse. If you aren't you should still watch anyway, simply because it is the end of a truly historical time in sports history. Whether you really understand why it's significant or not, it is, and you should be a part of it, if only to be able to look back on it later and know you were.

Coverage on NBC looks to start at 4:00 PM ET, Post time is 5:35 ET

I will be live chatting the race in #aio

It's official. We have witnessed the greatest ever.
#aio wrote:[14:38] <bookworm> American Pharoah has made history, now he attempts to write it. In his final race, the Breeder's Cup Classic, he will run to become the first horse to win what has been dubbed the Grand Slam: a victory here in addition to the Triple Crown.
[14:38] <bookworm> Just had the 'riders up'!
[14:38] <bookworm> Call to post!
[14:40] <Blitz> ....
[14:42] <bookworm> The field contains the only horse to beat Pharoah since he started winning, in his last race at the Travers
[14:51] <bookworm> Even if he doesn't win, this is still history; he's the first Triple Crown winner to run in the Classic. So first even chance for a Grand Slam, whether it's won or not.
[14:52] <bookworm> In the gate!
[14:53] <bookworm> They're off!
[14:55] <bookworm> He did it!
[14:55] <Penguin_Mobile> He won?? =o
[14:55] <bookworm> Yes
[14:56] <Blitz> I no idea what you are talking about...
[14:57] <bookworm> This is so great for the sport, and so great for Bob Baffert!
[14:58] <bookworm> I'm extremely pleased
[15:00] <bookworm> Taking a final lap before the fans
[15:01] <bookworm> What a moment.
