Horse Racing 2016

If there's something on your mind that just doesn't seem to fall into any of the other categories, well, it quite likely belongs inside Joe Finneman's marketplace. Think of it as a general store for general discussions!

Yeah, this is exciting! I may try to be there but if we're anywhere, we'll probably be watching the race ;)

4:16 <bookworm>: A huge downpour started out of nowhere during the national anthem
4:16 <bookworm>: But it stopped during commercial and is completely clear again now
4:16 <bookworm>: Weird
5:02 <bookworm>: As always I'm rooting for Bob Baffert, so it's Mor Spirit this year.
5:04 <bookworm>: The Derby favorite, Nyquist, is named after the Redwing player. That's cool
5:08 <bookworm>: Wow a full field
5:08 <bookworm>: 20 horses I think
5:32 <bookworm>: Riders up from Sean Payton
5:32 <bookworm>: Cool
5:33 <bookworm>: Call to post!
5:34 <bookworm>: My Old Kentucky Home
5:37 <bookworm>: The Japanese horse can't even be walked over with the others because it doesn't get along
5:38 <bookworm>: That will be interesting once the gates open
5:45 <Connie>: HEY
15:45 <Connie>: It's starting??
15:45 Connie goes to turn on her TV
15:46 <bookworm>: Yes, almost to the gates
15:48 <bookworm>: In the gates
15:49 <bookworm>: They're off!
15:51 <bookworm>: Nyquist wins!
15:59 <Connie>: That was fun :D

After being the case the last two years, the Triple Crown will not be on the line at the Belmont this year as Nyquist's rival finally got the better of him.

15:26 <Tikvah>: Not many people here yet.
15:26 <bookworm>: No one else probably will be
15:26 <bookworm>: I'm the only one that cares
15:26 <bookworm>: :p
15:27 <bookworm>: It's really raining there. Just like last year as I recall.
15:27 <Tikvah>: Well, I'd join, but I don't have a TV, so...
15:27 <bookworm>: NBC may be streaming it
15:28 <bookworm>: Don't know if it would be free though
15:28 <Tikvah>: Well, it wouldn't hurt for me to check.
15:29 <bookworm>: Yeah definitely worth checking
15:30 <bookworm>: Can't load it on my phone, but it should be on here somewhere:

15:33 <Kaida>: People
15:33 <bookworm>: I want Nyquist to keep winning
15:33 <bookworm>: But if he doesn't, I wan't Bob's
15:33 <bookworm>: Don't remember who he has in this one
15:34 <bookworm>: It's not the one from the Derby
15:36 <bookworm>: Riders up!
15:37 <bookworm>: Collected is Bob's
15:37 <bookworm>: Call to post!
15:38 <bookworm>: Maryland My Maryland
15:43 <bookworm>: Wow it is really muddy
15:43 <Kaida>: What's happenin'?
15:43 <bookworm>: Nothing yet
15:43 <bookworm>: Heading to the gate
15:44 <Kaida>: Whale then... I'm out.
15:44 Kaida quit
15:44 <bookworm>: Heh
15:44 <Tikvah>: Hmph.
15:45 <bookworm>: Best odds after the favorite and challenger is 8-1
15:45 <bookworm>: Really just a two horse race
15:45 <Tikvah>: Hmm.
15:45 <bookworm>: Two at 50-1 and a 60-1
15:45 <bookworm>: Why even bother
15:45 <bookworm>: Lol
15:46 <bookworm>: I hope one of those win kind of
15:46 <Tikvah>: Rooting for an underdog? :P
15:47 <bookworm>: Not rooting, but wouldn't mind seeing it
15:47 <Tikvah>: This is honestly the first time I've followed a sports game, so I don't know anything.
15:47 <bookworm>: Oh were you here for the KF thing? That's not yet
15:47 <bookworm>: This is something else
15:47 <bookworm>: :)
15:47 <Tikvah>: I realize.
15:48 <Tikvah>: I'm just early.
15:48 <bookworm>: Good for you, you get a bonus horse race
15:48 <bookworm>: \:D/
15:48 <Tikvah>: I guessed this is what you were watching, by the mention of horses. :P
15:49 <bookworm>: Well done ;)
15:49 <bookworm>: Collected is at 16-1
15:50 <bookworm>: Probably going to be either Nyquist or Exaggerator like everyone is saying
15:50 <bookworm>: Really don't see anyone else getting in there
15:50 <bookworm>: In the gate!
15:52 <bookworm>: They're off!
15:54 <bookworm>: Exaggerator wins!
15:54 <bookworm>: Wow
15:55 <bookworm>: Impressive surge at the end
15:56 <Tikvah>: Heh.
15:57 <bookworm>: That was a good crossover, I've never seen a pass like that
15:57 <Dan_in_Trank_Tank>: meanwhile i'm watching junky muscle cars run an autocross course..
15:57 <bookworm>: Ha, cool

Incredible photo finish at the Belmont! And even if Nyquist had taken the Preakness the Triple Crown still wouldn't have been up this year because he ended up not running. So it's been a much lower key season than last year, but still fun. Three different winners in the three jewels.

15:24 <bookworm>: Just had the "riders up" from the four living Triple Crown winning jockeys. Very cool
15:24 <bookworm>: Call to post!
15:25 <bookworm>: Playing New York New York
15:29 <bookworm>: Bob doesn't have one in this? :(
15:30 <bookworm>: I don't know who to root for now
15:30 <bookworm>: Since there's not a streak going
15:32 <bookworm>: I guess I'll take Suddenbreakingnews because I like the name
15:37 <bookworm>: That Japanese horse is still causing problems
15:38 <bookworm>: Getting in the gates...
15:38 <bookworm>: They're off!
15:41 <bookworm>: Too close to call!
15:41 <bookworm>: What a race!!
15:41 <bookworm>: That was great
15:43 <bookworm>: Creator made the pass on Destin by a nose!
15:43 <bookworm>: Great finish!

I'm a little disappointed the Triple Crown wasn't in play this year, and the lack of the 37-year gap kinda takes the excitement of it out of me. Ah, well. I guess it can't happen every year. ;)

We got a rematch after all! After Nyquist was scratched from the Belmont they met in the Haskell which Exaggerator wasn't originally going to run. A very exciting race that Exaggerator took with a last turn pass. There was an interesting delay on the official call with a foul claim filed, but it was denied.

Baffert goes 1 and 2 in the Travers with Arrogate and American Freedom and sets a track record for good measure! \:D/

Ready to wrap the year up next weekend at the Breeder's Cup with the return of California Chrome. Remember him? Came up short in a Triple Crown bid in 2014. Should be exciting, a well known horse like that back in a prominent race.

With the Breeder's Cup the last big event left in the season, I made a timely discovery that I think is very cool.
I found this on a shelf of free stuff at a library I visited:

Image

It's a promotional booklet for the very first Breeder's Cup in 1984! I assume it was distributed to trainers because it explains the creation of this new series, how the process and winnings will work, and in the back actually has a form for submitting nominations of horses to be in the first running.
