It was mentioned at least once in the primary 3 LOTR books... it's a valid name ;)

I'm not really a big LotR fan, but... at least I get to be one of the coolest characters! \:D/

Sauron is the guy that don't got a body. In the books he used to have a pretty and shiny body, but it got all ulgy when he caused the destruction of the Island that Aragorn's ancestors are from (Sauron was still on the island. not a very smart guy). Then his body got destroyed when Isildur cut off the ring.
