Whitty Whit clearly does things the right way, since I also always log in each time and never log in automatically. 
This does allow the birthday person to get a little more notice, which is nice. I think in the past some people thought the announcement thing was overkill, and other people think that just having the bottom listing is underkill. Either way works for me, so I will consider myself the winner here.
