Ask the Gay Guy

Because I felt like I was done with my atheist thread and I was kind of tired of debating about such things, mostly because I was repeating myself a lot, I'm going to start this new thread. And because there's a resurgence of threads going on now.

This thread is for questions about homosexuality. If you have questions about anything else, address them in my atheist thread or the general atheist thread.

I am a gay guy, that means that I'm attracted to people of the same sex. That's basically it. I know there are many many misconceptions about this topic so that's why I'm here. There are several other gay people around the too and maybe they might want to join in. But for now it's just me. Let's do this! \:D/

I realized I was gay at the age of 10 in fifth grade. About the time I started having crushes on other people. That is as far back as I can remember as far as sexuality goes. I don't remember having sexual thoughts at the time, though since I hadn't hit puberty yet.

Nah, xiao, I don't actually drink. :( And even if I did it wouldn't be legal since I'm not even 21 yet. Shh... ;)

I don't know what causes homosexuality. There are various ideas running around. Most agree, however, that there are genetic reasons for homosexuality. Heredity and genetics is actually very complicated. Most traits are not influenced by only one gene. As such it is relatively likely that sexuality is caused by several genes. One hypothesis I've seen several times is the idea that genetics that cause homosexuality may cause increased sexual activity in the opposite gender. Male homosexuals may have had female relatives who were more sexually active, for instance. This may be an explanation for why it continues to exist. However I'm not a scientist so I'd recommend looking elsewhere for questions of that nature.

But to answer your question, yes. I do believe I was "born gay." I never choose who to be attracted to.

Looking towards the future, have you considered/do you plan on marrying someone of the same sex?

I would like to do so, certainly. But I'm only twenty and not in a romantic relationship at the moment, so it's really to early to tell.

Do you feel discriminated against in today's culture? If so, how?

I have run into harassment before, quite a few times in high school, but I haven't ever really run into discrimination like bullying or not being hired because I'm gay or all those fun things you hear on the news. But I have run into discrimination from my family in the form of "love the sinner, hate the sin" and "ex-gay" groups. I feel discrimination from our society in general in that many in our society are campaigning to make me and many other people in the country not have their same rights. I feel discrimination from my own state, North Carolina, which so casually put into its state constitution an amendment to define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Why do you think LIBERAL MEDIA that claims to be trying to help the homosexual acceptance cause almost always just has the super flaming flamboyant gay characters who embody every negative gay stereotype ever? I have never understood that, if they are serious about gay acceptance. Of all the gay people I've met through work and such only like two were remotely flamboyant.

Maybe because they're not the "liberal media" that everyone makes them out to be? Seriously, I'm tired of that.

But ya, you're right. It's the same reason we had black face once upon a time. It's a stereotype that people readily identify. They recognize immediately "oh that's a gay person." But if shows were to have gay people who didn't embody the stereotype, people might feel a little more uncomfortable because they couldn't immediately pick out that that person is gay. We're obsessed with people's sexuality in this country, we just absolutely have to know if that person is gay or not and that extends even to having to know if someone "catches" or "receives." When the reality is that people don't fit into nice little categories like that. We have an obsession, as human beings, not only with having to know people's sexuality, but also cataloging and putting people into distinct groups. Useful when hunting for things that might eat you, not so useful when talking to people in general.
