Halloween

Post by John Chrysostom »

My family never celebrated Halloween growing up but this year I'm throwing a Halloween party. What do you all think?

I think you converted to Satanism. :noway:

We never celebrated it when I was a kid... I use it as an excuse to make people watch stupid old horror movies in my adult life. \:D/

Eh. I never really "celebrated it". In my house, they always made me give the candy out to the spoiled rotten brats that yelled and screamed if they got pathetic candy.

But hey, free Tootsie Roll Pops, right?

I said that it is up to the individual. Doing so is fine.

Is it a costume party?

My parents never let us 'celebrate' halloween...They would just buy us a boat load of candy and we'd watch movies all night so we wouldn't feel left out from other kids.

But personally, I don't think Christians should put themselves into the halloween environment because it's a "holiday" about death, ghosts, blood and gore. But, I think you can have a halloween party that's thrown in the right way without surrounding yourself with all of those things. At least that's what we did last year. =]

Someone on my Facebook had something about "Why do people go all-out celebrating DEATH and HELL? Are they that excited to get there?" I'm mildly a horror movie fan but I don't consider that wanting to be in hell, but WHATEVS.

I put down no. That being said, I do understand why Christians do go trick-or-treating. Growing up, we always handed out candy and included tracts with them. Needless to say, there was usually candy left over so no lack there!
The main reason I selected no is that there are a lot of things wrong with this. I could be wrong, but one thing that seems to be at the forefront of Halloween is an enhanced presence of fear. In 2 Timothy 1:7 we read read that God
has not given us the spirit of fear. If God hasn't given us the spirit of fear, why should we bring it upon ourselves? God gives us exactly what we need, and fear isn't one of those things. :)

I get that logic, but if I see a skeleton in someone's yard I just think it's funny and not scary. >_>

@T.S. Yes it is a costume party

To everyone else you seem to be saying it's wrong because of the fear surrounding it but can't we try and redeem the original reason for the holiday just like we still celebrate Christmas even though it's surrounded by consumerism these days?

I believe Christians can celebrate Halloween if they so desire. What my family does is go to an All Saint's Eve party wiht a ton of other families. All the kids dress up as Saints and go around and play certain games at booths to win candy.

Halloween is morally evil because there's so much sugar involved.

Yes, as it says in the Gospel of Marvin, sugar is the root of all evil.

I believe it depends on how you celebrate it.
