So.

I'm a writer. Not published (yet, Lord willing), but a writer. Meaning that I can't stop writing no matter how hard I try, I scribble in a notebook by my bed because unless I write the ideas down I can't sleep, and my characters seem like real people.

Hrm. Anyway...

I have a new project. Or, the basic, basic idea for it. And I want feedback from you all.

I'm going to post the chat that started the whole thing here. At the end, I have some questions I'd love for you to answer, and any comments, thoughts, questions and concerns would be instrumental to how this story turns out. Ready? Here goes!

North Wall Mirror: Chat 1 wrote:
me: Noordhoek. It's so...enthralling. With poepic ring to it. {Poetic + epic}
Noordhoek: XD
when you break it down it's not so epic... It's just Dutch for North Corner. XD
me: * chuckles *
Yes, but the North Corner of what? Great possibilities...
Noordhoek: Probably North Corner of Holland
Or of the world
Or of a town in Holland
I don't know where my great-grandparents came from.
(other than Holland. XD)
me: Or of Baker Street, or the TARDIS, or Atlantis, or the wind!
Noordhoek: XD
I don't think I came from the North Corner of the TARDIS. ;)
me: Ah, but because of your name you could have a link to a portal that is connected to North Corners.
Noordhoek: o.O
me: And...you'd reach through the mirror hung on the north wall, and you could go through it.
Noordhoek: My mirror's on my south wall..
It was on a north wall once, though. And I never got through it.
me: And there would be...someplace else. And in the clear northern sky, portals, everywhere. And somehow getting up to the right one isn't a problem...
Noordhoek: Go write this story. o.o
me: See, your problem is that your mirror is on the wrong wall.
You have to turn your house around.
* nod nod *
Seriously?
Noordhoek: XD
YES!
It sounds like a brilliant story.
I give you permission to steal my last name, too. xD
(btw, I'll inform daddy he needs to pick up the house and turn it around when he gets the chance... ;) )
me: * grins *
Noordhoek: You could translate 'south corner' and 'east corner' and 'west corner' into other languages too.
Get a whole team of portal users.
Good guys and bad guys.
me: Oh, good, thank you. Otherwise I'd have to look up a form of your name in Swahili, or something.
Yus!
Brilliant!
Noordhoek: lol, isn't Swahili a symbol based language..?
me: No idea.
How do you know your mirror is on the south wall, by the way...
Oh! And all the bad guys... the mirror polarity is reversed, so their mirrors have to face their direction!
Noordhoek: Because I know which way is south? XD
Oooo. Cool. :D
me: And fairies have the SE, NW, etc. ;)
Noordhoek: There are fairies? likes fairies
me: I didn't know if you decided to use that compass, or something. ;)
Yes, I think so.
Noordhoek: What compass? XD
Yays! :D
me: * shrugs * The girl in the story has to find one.
Noordhoek: she does?
me: I think.
Or...her compass doesn't work there, maybe.
She can only see her wall, and only go through her mirror.
But the South girl (bad guy) has her mirror on the wall. Which confuses her.)
Noordhoek: I'm a little confused now...
Why can she only see her wall? :?
me: Because... I mean, she can only see her wall of portals.
Noordhoek: Oh. she can't see South portals
Or west or east
me: Wall...sky is more technical.
Yeah.
And...the bad guys are "bent." Thus the mirrors are on the wall opposite their direction. It "bends" to get in the 'right' direction.
Or maybe...Phantoms...are SE, NW, NE, etc.
Noordhoek: no stealing my races. ;)
me: And there's the idea of NS... Which leaves you spinning in a circle.
I'm kidding.
Noordhoek: o.O I wanna spin in a circle ^_^
About the phantoms?
so was I, sort of.
It'd be cool to have phantoms and portals....
me: Yeah. Unless you want to co-write it.
^^
Noordhoek: I can give you my info on phantoms and call it co writing. :D
Because i'm not all that much of a writer. xD
me: Okay, sounds good!
You can give me feel-good feedback too, or something... ;)
Noordhoek: XD
'course
And you will show me every word you write. ;)
me: Yes ma'am! :D
Bubbles...
Sometimes little bubbles appear on the mirrors...
Only when the Direction is alone, though.
That's what the North girl is. A Directional.
Noordhoek: this is getting cooler by the second. XD
me: I know. O.O

Okay, questions!!! Be warned, I might ask more as I think of them... =D Please, please, don't be shy about giving positive or negative feedback. Seriously, I want it, and will take it into consideration. Even if you think it doesn't matter, or it's just a random idea...post it. For example, the whole "bubbles" concept was from a random aside comment. So please, please share. And you if you think of something else, come tell me!!! =D

Er...Questions wrote:
What do you think of the idea initially?

Is this something you would want to read?

Do you have any ideas in what direction the story could go, based on the (insane! =P) chat above?

Does the storyline give you any concerns?

Have you seen these concepts, or some like them, used before? Where? What did you like/dislike about they way they were used? Any cliches what jump out at you?

How insane do you think I am now?

Do you have any general wisdom, ideas, or other things you want to share?

Thanks a million!

Can you explain the initial idea a bit more? I'm confused. I understand that mirrors are portals and depending on what direction they face, that is where you end up. But does the portal only work if a mirror is opposite it (for example: if you go through a north facing mirror, do you come out a south facing portal in a separate house)? Also, if no one knows the directions (which is why they need compasses) then how would they know where to put the mirrors?

Oh, yes, that might be helpful... I'm still working out some of the kinks myself, and some details were explained after the initial idea. Sorry to be confusing! O.O

Okay. The North mirror is hung on the North wall. The North Directional (North Girl) can go through the mirror to In Between, which is sort of like the Wood between the Worlds in The Magician's Nephew by C. S. Lewis. And on the North Sky are portals.

Now. The North Girl has a last name of Noordhoek, which means "North Corner." And all of the portals lead to the North corners of places all over the world. The North corner of Buckingham Palace, Atlantis, and even her house. She is the only who can get through the North mirror, and she can only see the North portals.

There are other Directionals for the other basic directions. Now, if they are the 'bad guys,' they are "bent," another C. S. Lewis idea of sorts... Thus, if the East Directional was "bent," his/her mirror would face East, instead of hanging on the East wall. Their way of getting to In Between is bent, in a way. They can only see the East portals, though.

Does that help, or confuse even more?

Ah, that helps. Thank you. That's really interesting. So for a 'bent' person to reach their destination, they have to head the opposite way... cool! Sounds like an intriguing story.

I think the idea is great.
Oh yes, definitely, the idea has me intrigued!
Uh, not really.
Not really, I think it's fantastic!
No, the idea is completely new to me!
I don't think you're insane!
Well, not really, sorry.

* grins * I'm glad you like it. Let me know if you have other thoughts... Just jotting down initial impressions helps a lot. =D

Hee hee, I think I'm insane... ;D

What do you think of the idea initially?
I am sort of confused, and make me think of all of the fun things that one can do with portals in the video game portal.

Is this something you would want to read?

No, because I don't read any fantasy.

Do you have any general wisdom, ideas, or other things you want to share?
So if thees are mirrors does that mean if a right handed person goes into a mirror then they come out left-handed?
Will people change size when they go though different sized portals? If so then what about the square cube law?
What happens if the north mirror is put on the south wall?
Are there top mirrors and floor mirrors too?

So what about a building that is build on the north pole?
How does one select though these billions of building corners that exist?
What about the north corners of everything that should not be entered by humans, like nuclear reactors?
What about round buildings?
