Clarification question: I have a picture I really want to take, but the way my hand is involved in the picture makes it nearly impossible for me to actually be the one taking the picture since it needs a depth of field. Is it okay for us to setup a shot and have someone else take the picture?
Sorry, I am just now getting back to you.. I suppose for this time, it'll be all right. :) Also, I will allow you extra time if you think you'll be late since I took so long to respond.

I have to protest that decision. If you don't snap the shutter you didn't take the photo, even if the scene is something you conceived. The way the other person decides to hold the camera, make slight adjustments, etc. introduces too many variables to call it your photo with certainty.

The lone exception to this would be a timer delayed shot. In that instance though you don't actively take the photo the shot is staged and framed by you without third party input affecting the end product.

I am still letting it slide for this round. If I had someone take a photo (that I envisioned).. I would still call it my photo. Besides.. I'm not gonna be tooooo picky with this. It is just a game, no tangible prizes.

It isn't though; the 'essence' of a photo, for lack of a better word, isn't the scene it shows, but how it shows that scene. You can set up the subject matter you want, but if someone else physically snaps the image it is their artistic take on the scene that gets infused into it, even if they don't intentionally vary from your direction. The photographer will always subconsciously adjust the image to their personal preferences. Depending on the subject matter the changes can be minor and subtle, but they're still made.

All that said though, in this type of event a scene envisioned by the entrant is probably 'good enough' as you say you're picking based on what the image conveys and not the image itself. The artistic differences between how the two would take the photo should not be so drastic as to lose or replace the original vision or concept.

There is a lot more to taking a photo than just pointing the camera and clicking the shutter button, bookworm. Just saying. If the person is doing more than pointing the camera (where you directed) and clicking the shutter.. then in that case, I'd say it isn't your photo anymore.

I've helped my brother with taking photos before.. and though I snapped the shot, it is still very much his photo.

Anyway, I have nothing else to debate on this issue.

It has to be a face made of objects, not an object with a face? (Smaug's 'cute' for example.)

An object with a face works too. As long as that face wasn't actually meant to be there.

I could have saved that photo to use here so... I didn't draw the smiley face myself, the pie just cracked that way. It was surprisingly adorable. ^_^

Okay, followup then, by not 'meant' to be there do you mean we have to personally make the face? Or can we use a face that 'naturally' appeared but 'shouldn't' have been there. (Smaug's example again, since she says it just happened to form that way.)

Yeessss... you can either make a face using random objects or find a smiley face that naturally happened but wasn't intended to be there.
