Today, for the first time since these episodes aired, I listening to "Last in a Long Line".
And after this listen, I still see no reason to come to any conclusion other then Leonard and Thelma were dead. Lines that lead me to the conclusion are as follows:
"My parents were lost on [insert Eugene talk that I don't feel like typing]"
**********
"Both my parents were [note the past tense] only children"
***********
Bernard: "He [read: Eugene] and Whit are relative hunting in Connellsville."
Lucy: Really? I didn't think he had any living relatives."
Bernard: "Well neither did he--you know how he's always calling himself the last of a long line."
*****
Eugene: "Is my father buried in Odyssey?"
Ralph: "No. You're parents died in Africa. Just like Hiram said they would."
--------------------------------
In light of all this, the events of The Top Floor are just too implausible. And in light of these quotes, my arguments stand just fine.
edit- And here's another interesting quote from Fued for Thought.
"Mr. Walton, I've lived most of my life under the assumption that I had no surviving relatives."
