Open Source Games

Post by Azariah Ben Yaakov »

So I have been browsing a lot of these games lately, because I cannot afford any commercial games now, and I have come across a few that I really enjoy. Most, if not all of these, have windows ports, so I am sure you guys can join in too.

Cube.

Website: http://cubeengine.com/

The game is basically quake I/II. Might as well be anyway. Since the quake engine is open source, a lot (LOT) of games are built on top of it, but this game really reminds me of the original quake.

Nexuiz.

Website: http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/

Currently what I am playing now. It's an online FPS, again, a lot like quake. This one is more like quake III arena, and I really enjoy it, because there are a lot of servers, fun weapons, and TONS of maps. When you connect to a server that requires a map that you don't have, it downloads it for you, and it is generally pretty snappy about it.

OpenArena.

Website: http://www.openarena.ws/

Also based on the quake engine, it falls in the line of Nexuiz. I prefer Nexuiz because it has better graphics, but that is just me. Game play is functionally the same.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. (ET)

Website: http://enemy-territory.4players.de:1041/news.php

This game is the sick nasty war game of open source developers. It is praised very highly, and has tons of expansions and versions *For instance Urban Terror*. You may notice the name is similar to the Quake Wars game. Enemy Territory Quake Wars is actually a follow up on this game, only it isn't set in WWII. I haven't had a chance to play this game personally because it has issues with my ATI proprietary driver *Which it shouldn't <_<* But eventually I will get it working. I HIGHLY recommend checking this game out on youtube.

Urban Terry.

Website: http://www.urbanterror.net/news.php

Very popular FS *Free software* game. I know a lot of people that play this game and love it. Think of it as an expansion to ET. So far what I see, it is somewhat like SOFI/II. And then not so much. Either way, it looks pretty sweet.

Americas Army.

Website: http://www.americasarmy.com/

Yeah, you all know this game. So descriptions are pointless. I never really could get it to run with decent performance for me. I really don't know why, I have over all of the requirements except for my graphics card which is a 128mb ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 (200m).

Battle for Wesnoth

Website: http://www.wesnoth.org/

It appears to be an MMORPG. I actually haven't played this yet, but I JUST installed it and I'll end up playing it right after I post this. So I am not really one to go into detail about it :P.

LinCity-ng

Website: http://lincity-ng.berlios.de/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Haven't played this one either, but I plan on it. Basically SimCity on an open source platform.

Tremulous

Website: http://tremulous.net/

From what I see here It looks pretty sick. I read some on the wiki, and apparently it is a fairly large, growing FPS. Again, haven't played this one yet, but I am also installing it as I post.

That's all I have for now. Most of these files range from 100mb-700mb. I think UrbanTerror is 700mb, and that is the biggest one I have come across so far.

I would love to hear if anyone else has any open source games they play :).

Spring TA

http://spring.clan-sy.com/

It's a real time strategy game engine based on Total Annihilation, geared towards multiplayer. Most games consist of 6 to 10 players, and there are dozens of different mods and game types that work with it.

It did a good job of holding me over until Supreme Commander came out.

And yes, check it out on Youtube.

I played a little bit of Battle for Wesnoth, and it's incredibly in depth. It'll take me awhile to get it all down, but the sounds are great, the graphics are good, it just seems like a really good MMORPG. I have observed a few battles online, and I want to continue playing SP before I go join, because from what I see, it will take me some time to learn all of it. And I don't want to hop on and be the n00b :P.

Edit: I was playing AssaultCube, that's pretty sick. I love it so far, man it's difficult though.

Edit #2: I forgot to mention Frets on Fire, and TrueCombat Elite.

Edit #3: Been playing BFW, and I must say, I am very addicted.

I would suggest Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. It's a fun game by itself, but on top of that there are a bunch of total conversion mods, so you can get a bunch of free games through it. True Combat: Elite is a really fun one.. You can youtube that aswell.

So far what looks the most graphically inclined FPS is "Sauerbraten". It's basically cube2.

Downloading now.

along the lines of Sauerbraten there's http://eisenstern.com/ an RPG that's being built off of that engine.

Sauerbraten looks cool, I'm going to download it when my unmetered download time slot is open (meaning tomorrow night, I already have stuff I'm downloading tonight.. :( ). I hate satellite internet. :(

Eisenstern looks good too, but it's not even in pre-production yet..

I'm downloading this game now.. It's a free total conversion mod for ET. Looks awesome. Someone said that if Counter-Strike and Americas Army had a baby, it would be this game. \:D/

Ziff: TC:E looks pretty cool, I had some issues with it though so I couldn't play :<.

I am definitely up for a game of Sauerbraten with anyone.
Or Battle for Wesnoth.

Great list, Ryan! \:D/ Meh... open source games are like prostitutes - just because you CAN mess with the insides doesn't mean doing so won't give you a horrible virus.

Hahaha. I can personally guarantee you that all of the aforementioned games that I listed do not contain malware in any sort \:D/.

Free software is VERY different from Freeware :).
