Green Lantern

Just saw this movie...I thought it was awesome! I'm not familiar with the comic, so I don't know if it closely matched, but the movie itself was good.
They had some good, fast character development at the beginning, describing his life, showing his fears, weaknesses, history, and personality. It made for a good contrast when he is presented with the ring and all the responsibility and courage he needs in order to fill the role. I enjoyed watching him develop as a character and rise to meet the challenges presented to him.

I also thought it had a good moral to it when the guardians explained why they didn't harness fear as power and avoided it for so long. The story--and whole movie--showed how dangerous it can be to play with evil--that no matter how tempting it is to "use" bad stuff in the name of doing good, that it will only lead to corruption. There is no such thing as using evil for good, and fighting evil with evil isn't the answer. In addition, it presented a good way to look at fear and deal with it--that denying that we are afraid of things isn't going to make the fears go away--what we need is to stand up to it and overcome it...much more realistic of a view.

The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the very end, when the guy put the yellow ring on. It simply didn't make sense for him to do it at that point, as Hal had just proved that fear was NOT a stronger or necessary power, and that the benefits of willpower were far better than the risk of taking fear as a power. Why would he then immediately reject that lesson and put the yellow ring? He doesn't seem to be one to be susceptible to mere curiosity.
What did you all think?

I was invited to go see it with some friends yesterday, but I opted out because I wasn't feeling great... then afterwords they all told me it was really bad. :P It only has a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, whose consensus I generally respect. Also of course it's in 3D. I'm seriously sick of 3D.

I've seen the trailer during commercial breaks for Jeopardy, and I have to say - it looks really corny and odd. :P But that's me, and I'm not into superhero/comic book stuff.

I agree with Jelly...

Sorry, Slor, but in order for Captain America to break out, this needs to underperform, so. \:D/ I'm sure I'll catch it on DVD, but not excited.

Sad day! :( I know it's gotten some mixed reviews--it seems to be a mix. Not sure why though, I don't know what people wouldn't have liked about it! It was a little different from some of the other superhero stories, which was kind of nice, in that the hero was actually part of a group of heros, rather than a stand-alone. {sigh} Ah well...and AE, it can be a great movie AND Captain America be good! It's not an either/or! And Jelly--you don't have to see it in 3D...I didn't.

It depends on your theater. Mine insists on showing them all in 3D. :(

Wow, that's stupid...it costs an arm and a leg to see it in 3D--mean of them not to give you a choice :(

eh, if it's a small theater, it's not like they can afford to give lots of screening options... they're probably doing really good to have a 3D screen at all, so they're going to make the most out of it. ;)

They also want people to pay an arm and a leg for 3D. ;)

True...but there are some people who will forgo the movie altogether if it's only in 3D--making it a number of people who would otherwise be customers not come...

Ya, and hopefully if that keeps happening 3D will stop being so overrated. :noway:

I saw it opening weekend--before I heard the bad reviews. It was all right as far as superhero movies go. The plot was entirely predictable if you've seen a lot of superhero movies, but my friend and I had fun predicting what would come next. The effects looked pretty awesome, and I would've liked to see it in 3D if it didn't cost $11 to do so.
