Paddington. The beloved book series

Post by Arkán Dreamwalker »

Did you think Paddington was just a book series, animated TV show and comic strip? Think again.

...Does everything have to be turned into a feature-length film these days? :-s Can't Paddington just be left alone?

Marmalade. Paddington was fun. There is still hope they might not completely ruin it!

They actually announced a live action/CGI movie of Paddington about 4 years ago. The poster (released last year) is the closest I've seen of any development .

I love the books. They are absolutely hillarious1 I wish that a British film studio or at least a lot of Brits would make the movie instead.

This looks horrific almost beyond belief. I say almost because of the past precedent set by the trashing of so many amazing books in the past, but this really looks terrible. I hope it turns out to be much better than the trailer that bookworm shared makes it look like, but I just can't imagine this being tolerable to anybody who loves Paddington...or good movies in general. I'd like to be wrong, but I don't think that I am.

I am not familiar at all with anything Paddington, but even I knew this was a facepalm when I saw it.

Completely agreed. 30 seconds into the trailer, I didn't hate it entirely, but I barely made it all the way through.

I'm holding out hope that the movie will still be good, and it was only the trailer that was bad. I love Paddington, and at least he looked pretty good. Well, one can only hope.

While everyone's reactions make sense, even after this trailer there's still hope.

1. When Mr. Brown was talking on the phone to lawyer, it was quite funny and it showed an understanding of the Paddington world. People don't go, "What the heck a talking bear!?" because they're children's books but they're not childish. So Mr. Brown and the lawyer both accept that Paddington is a talking bear, but they don't know quite what to do with him. The lawyer and Mr. Brown both seem bemused and out of their comfort zone, which is pretty much what's at the heart of the Paddington books. Padington shakes peoples' worlds, he comes onstage and business-as-usual instantly turns to chaos.

2. The gross out humor could've been worse. It was a bit funny, and in a way, almost in tune with Paddington is. Just generally confused. Hopefully there won't be too much of it though.

3. They had elements from the books! it was really neat that they took the bath and made it into a huge scene. That's exactly what you do: when you have a short book, don't throw it out, just make what happens crazier so that there's some eye candy. it really nerdy having scenes here and there thrown into a different storyline, familiar yet different. And when you think about it, that's exactly what successful children's book adaptations do. Excellent films like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and the recent, Winnie the Pooh Curious George and Horton Hears a Who.

There are other little touches I love as well (the drop of water, straight from the book, landing in Mr. Brown's mug, here with a caution sign, in a really cool shot. Giving Jonathan a skull shirt.

Still, we will see.
