Why are people in movies but on tv shows?

This is one of life's greatest mysteries :( I have pondered this question many times.

And I really can't come up with an answer.

Haha.

I can hear it the other way too. Although maybe more in the usages of "he's IN that new tv show," and "I saw her ON the big screen in the latest movie from that one director."
