Jeopardy Battle of the Decades

Post by bookworm »

This just finished up, it probably would have been better to post about it while it was going on, but the Battle of the Decades tournament Jeopardy did was possibly the coolest thing ever on the show. Other than the IBM Challenge. This was a best of showcase like no other.

It started with rounds for returning players that were on the show in the 80's, 90's, and 2000's, each competing against people from their own decade, then moved on into a regular tournament with them competing against everyone else.

It went down to exactly who it should have had in the final, the three Jeopardy legends. Roger Craig, holder of the highest one day winnings record, Ken Jennings, holder of the winning streak record which will never be beaten, and Brad Rutter, holder of the total winnings record which will probably never be beaten. It was amazing to see these three in one game. Two games in fact, since the final was a two day cumulative.

There was a crazy series of events with Roger.
In the first game he had $10,200 in Double Jeopardy and hit a Daily Double. With Ken encouraging him "Do it!" he risked everything, and got it wrong. He was unable to build his money back up, and in fact finished the game in the red, meaning he was absent for Final Jeopardy. It was a two day final, so he would be back for the next game though, he would just start with zero money to build on. The other two had relatively small final scores though, so it was conceivable to come back from this. Until what happened the next day.
In the second game he had $10,200, the exact same amount, in Double Jeopardy and hit a Daily Double again. With Brad jokingly encouraging "Don't do it this time!" he risked everything again, and again got it wrong. He was able to get a little money back before the end, but not enough to get out of third place once the first day scores were added on regardless of how Final Jeopardy went, so he knew he was finishing third.
