Yay! I saw the title and it definitely has people buzzing about what it could mean. :D

I like the red title. This was also used in the Darth Maul episodes of Clone Wars.

Yes, it was. It seems quite ominous! Only the genius of Star Wars can create so much commotion over a three-word title (one of the words being "the") ;) and the colour selection! Only 11 more months to go.

So excited! just wish it didn't take so loooooooonggggg........
I think the "last Jedi" would be Luke, although that seems kind of obvious; my brother thinks it's gonna be Rey :-k

I really want to find out who Rey is, they better tell us SOON! :x  :boohoo: 8-)

I bet the last Jedi is one of the seagulls that kept attacking Yoda! \:D/

Jedi is both singular and plural, this could refer to both of them. 'Luke and Rey are our only hope, they are 'the last Jedi'.'

If it only refers to one of course it's Luke. Rey is on her journey, but she is not a Jedi yet (Vader reference \:D/ ) and also just logistically, if they are saying there is only one there is no alternative to it being Luke because he is one, so if there is only one it can only be him.

The Last Jedi bit could also be in reference with the opening crawl of TFA.

Quote:
Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

My brother pointed out that this title choice kind of ruins the title of Episode VI. I hadn't thought about it that far yet, but he's really right. We're only one movie removed from the Return of the Jedi but now suddenly we're at the last of them? :|

Well, the title might be more or less literal. It could be like, "Oh hey, there's Luke, the last Jedi!" at the beginning of the movie and by the end be more like, "Yay Luke for reviving the Jedi stuff and making sure we will have Jedi for generations to come!" Or not. Just speculating. ;)

That was my thought. It's gonna be hard for Disney to milk the series if they kill off all the Jedi. :anxious:

It was my understanding that was what happened between VI and Force Awakens? Luke tried to revive the Jedi and something went horribly wrong and that's why he's now in exile. This movie is presumably him returning to face the consequences of that failure now that Rey found him.

But even if you're correct, it still doesn't help what I'm looking at. My point was the disconnect just looking at the touchstones of the running plot. Our last major one was 'Luke defeats the Dark Side, the Jedi are back (ie: Return of the Jedi)', then something yet unknown happened that stalled all that requiring the Force to be 'awoken' again, and our next touchstone is two steps backward at only having 'the last' Jedi around. That is to say, following the trend of the plot, RotJ: Light Side trending up, FA: yet to be explained, TLJ: Light Side near rock bottom.
My concern isn't that the plot has cycled, it's that we skipped over the cycle. Last we saw things were headed up, suddenly things aren't simply headed back down but they are already at the bottom. It causes a disconnect to have this sudden reset without having seen the turn back downhill. I'm sure it will be explained over this movie and the final in the new trilogy, so eventually it will make sense, but what I'm saying is right now, when all we have is these three points to look at (Episodes 6, 7, 8) it's odd to have the flow reset so abruptly (only one movie apart).

I'm not sure that explains what I'm trying to get at quite clearly, so to simplify it way down look at it as someone just looking over the titles and nothing more. 1) Return of the Jedi, 2) *whatever*, 3) The Last Jedi - the reaction, at least for me, is 'Wait, if they just returned why is it the last now already?' It's purely about the proximity of the flip. It would be less jarring if it was something like after Episode VI was the return VII had been seeing a little of them back at the top, this one showed the start of the decline, and the final one was where we're now at 'the last' of them.
Now, as I said, the being at the top and what led to the decline will eventually be filled in, in hindsight, but I'm talking about just with what we have right now, going from trending upward immediately to flatlining without seeing the turn back down is awkward. Even if it makes sense later when we get the details, the linear progression will always have this odd hiccup of going from heading up the hill to blinking and suddenly being back at the bottom, needing to get the explanation of the in between later and and backfill the missing story. That's all. It's not a problem per se, it's just awkward. None of the rest of the saga has jumped around like this.

The whole fun of teaser trailers is to speculate wildly and broadly! \:D/ It was quite interesting, and I was a little surprised to see the Millennium Falcon in the trailer. I wonder if Chewie and Rey are using it? Or Poe after his ship is blown up? There are lots of things to wonder about between April and December, that's for sure! :thud:

I'm shaking my head at everyone going crazy over "that line". It's the most obvious 'trailer bait' I've ever seen. (Meaning a line that is taken out of context and put in the trailer to sound like it means something super critical or shocking, but in the actual movie is nothing of consequence.) Do people really think anyone, but especially Luke of all people, is going to end the Jedi here? Seriously? The trailer opens with him teaching Rey to use the Force!

It's perfectly clear what context the line is actually going to be used in. We don't know the details of what happened between RotJ and TFA, but we do know in general that Luke tried to reform the Jedi and something went horribly wrong, causing him to blame and exile himself. You can see that scene takes place on Luke's hideaway island, meaning it's at the beginning of the movie soon after she meets him. So clearly she asks what happened, he explains whatever went wrong, and because he thinks it was his fault "it's time for the Jedi to end" so no more people get hurt. Obviously she convinces him to change his mind as we saw that he agrees to train her.

It's a good trailer line for five seconds when it gives the initial shock of 'what does he mean??' but after minimal thought you realize it means nothing substantial in the long run.

A good teaser trailer gets people talking, so it definitely accomplished that! I agree that I'm sure that most of that hype will be totally overblown, but hey, it will still be fun!

Bookworm, dude, I don't understand why it bothers you. Yes, people are going to take things out of context, we're excited and ready to learn all we can about the upcoming film.
It seems like you've got a plausible theory worked out, though it's difficult to determine why he said what he did. The writers aren't going to lend over the entire plot beforehand. :)
