I've been hearing about the book for years but never read it, now I'm curious enough to check it out after seeing the trailer. I dunno, could be a mess, but... but... a flying Delorian!

I haven't read the book, but I saw an interview with the author a few years ago and it sounded pretty neat. I think I would like it, just never made the effort to track it down. From the small knowledge I have about the property though I was pretty excited when I heard a movie was coming. It could definitely be messy as you said, but it could also be amazing. I trust Spielberg; I hope it's a great success.

Hmm, I can't say that the trailer really interested me that much, but Steven Spielberg isn't renowned for making terrible movies. ;) I'll wait to find out more before I decide whether I watch it or not.

The trailer doesn't let you know what's going on if you're not already aware of what the story involves. This is a synopsis the author gave in an interview:
Ernest Cline wrote:The story is set about 30 years from now when the real world was kind of a c.rappy place due to climate change and peak oil so a big chunk of the world go into a virtual reality simulation called The Oasis which is kind of the coolest possible future version of the internet combining social networking and the world wide web all kind of mashed into this sprawling virtual reality. The creator of this virtual reality dies and leaves his entire fortune and control of this virtual world to whoever can solve these video game puzzles that he's left behind to locate this easter egg that he's hidden inside the game. The hook is that all of these puzzles and riddles that he's left behind to unlock deal with classic like 1980's video games and 80's movies and kind of the pop culture of the 1980's which he grew up obsessed with, so to win this huge fortune all of these players have to become experts in 1980's pop culture.

The book was pretty meh to me. I got about 80% of the references but without the nostalgia factor it didn't really add much. Visually it could be cool but eh. :shrugs:

Honestly, the description tells me more about what's going on with the plot, but doesn't make me any more interested in seeing the movie.

That's fair. I think it's a neat concept personally, but if the hook isn't appealing the rest probably isn't either because that's what it's really about I think.

I read the first chapter or two of the book, but it wasn't really for me. I didn't get the eighties references, and wasn't a fan of the author's writing style. :shrugs: It has an interesting premise though, so might give the movie a go!

I got about that far, and while I got the 80's references, the book basically read like, "And here is a bunch of 80's references! List, list, list* which was pretty painful and I gave up. I heard that the movie was better so gave it a go. I suppose it was better than the book and all the random cameos were cool, but it was an incredibly dumb plot and not really great. Maybe worth seeing once if you've got MoviePass or whatever. I was pretty happy with the thing used by the main villain towards the end but I suppose I won't spoil it at the moment. That almost made it all worthwhile!

I'm sorry to hear you disliked it so much Top, I really thought it would be right up your alley.

I enjoyed it quite a bit myself. It had some issues, but for what it was I thought it was pretty well done and very entertaining. I think the premise of the plot is neat so I was on board with the story, and as a viewing experience I found a lot of fun. I was engaged all the way though and it did not feel its length to me at all.

So I haven't rewatched it since last spring so maybe my thoughts aren't all intact, but I remember thinking they should've made the one main girl look weirder or something, lol. Like they made it sound like she was going to be horribly disfigured or morbidly obese and she just had a little skin blemish. OH NOES!!!!!

That is definitely one of the most prominent issues, yes. I'm certainly not saying it's a flawless movie, just that I personally found it good enough to be a really fun time.
