During the election, Lizzie and I said we would be willing to upgrade the board to phpBB3 if the town says "yes." Well, here's your chance to say "yes!"
The poll will end on Saturday, June 6 (10 PM EST). Best wishes to phpBB3! Thanks to Tyler for providing the following phpBB3 explanation and to all the voters for participating!
Tyler wrote:phpBB3 is the current version of the phpBB forum software, it was released back in 2007 and has had ample updates since then. The Town of Odyssey is running on phpBB2, a forum software package that is considered obsolete in the tech world today.
The Town of Odyssey is way past due on this upgrade as it adds many new features that could improve your ease of use on the board, and it will help the admins out as it offers many more options as far as customization of the board goes.
But I heard that phpBB3 will delete all of the posts and topics!
No! We can convert the whole board over to phpBB3 and the topics/posts/boards/users will be safe! But I don't think we need this! If it's unnecessary then NO!
The phpBB3 system not only makes it alot easier for everyone around, it will also provide ALOT more security from hackers and spambots and the like, it will also provide more comprehensive options for the admins in terms of 'jailing', and will help make the factions easier to manage!
So, what kind of features are in phpBB3?
There are alot of new features in phpBB3 that improve basic usability, think of it like upgrading from Microsoft Word 97' to Word 08'. Here's some of the features I found interesting (gleaned from a list of features found here.)
You can have user suspensions right out-of the box, mods/admins can also issue 'warnings' and individual users can report posts.
Admins can create custom bbcode (such as a youtube code), users can easily do multiple quoting, users can add file attachments to their posts, you can save you posts as a draft and go back and finish it later, you can have multiple option voting, you can have the option of going back and changing your vote in a poll.
If you're making a post and someone posts in the thread while you are still creating your post, the topic review will update and you will get a small notification of it.
There are more comprehensive options in the search.
There can be password protected forums.
There can be a seperate section for the rules. (Like the FAQ we have now)
You can subscribe to a topic, and get a PM everytime a new post shows up.
In your Inbox you can manage your drafts, send PMs to multiple recipients, send PMs to whole groups, forward messages, have a customizable address book, and the PMs will be viewed in a forum thread-like conversation view.
Usergroups can have multiple leaders, and custom colors in the memberlist at the bottom.
Moderators have alot of new powers, such as merging topics and posts, managing reported topics and posts, and adding notes for other mods/admins to view to a users profile. (among many others)
And all this is just the stuff that caught my eye! There are many more features in phpBB3 and it is definitely worth the time to upgrade!

Yeah, it sounds good. Usually, upgraded changes in technology are a good thing. Not Facebook, but that's a different story. Though, on that note, if people don't like it at the beginning, they're sure to get used to it in a while.
As I quoted in the PANDA BEAR thread, from Shadowpaw's Farewell Speech:
Shadowpaw wrote:Now, with that said, I will not be leaving entirely. As I did with the database earlier this week, I intend to continue to do what I can "technically" for the board. Whether that be fixing crashes when they occur or upgrading the board when necessary, I'll be around to perform those tasks. We will also be moving The Town of Odyssey to PHPBB 3.0 when it is released, which will be a project onto itself, but I'm willing to cross that bridge when we get to it and make the decisions that need to be made at that time.
(bolded by me)
In other words, this is what he would have done right about now, anyway.

I wasn't yelling. I was talking with vehemence.
I asked that when it was first discussed, and yes, the jobs and money have been implemented into PHPBB3 (aka )
EDIT: Gah, everyone is posting before me.
