Thoughts from watching the Oscars and remembering Marvin’s idea for the ToO Boardies combined in my head to inspire something that I think would be pretty cool, but would only work if other people thought that as well so I’m just throwing it out here to check public opinion.

I have an idea for what would essentially be the Academy Awards of ToO threads. There would be a group of specified members that kept their eyes out as they browse around for threads that stand out for one reason or another. Every other month or so they would hold a conference to compare their selections and officially choose nominees. Then once a year they would select from those nominees the best of the best and those threads would be publicly recognized.

It’s similar to the Topic Hall of Fame, but significantly different in several ways. First, each group of nominees is strictly limited to threads created in the last calendar year. Second, the awards will be for specific theme categories. And third, the selection will be a joint decision by the Academy, so the threads that make it are definitely worthy because they require a consensus.

I have some more details and ideas on how exactly it would all function at the various parts, but I didn’t want to put too much thought or time into it until I verified if it was even something anyone else would be interested in, so please give feedback.

I’m seeing positive reactions, so I’ll plan on going forward with this. We’ll at least try it out. Here’s a more detailed rundown of how it would all function.

As I said there will be a special group of members, the ToO Academy, that will browse the forums as they usually do, but in the back of their mind be keeping a special eye out for threads that catch their attention for one reason or another, be it the topic it’s on or the content that develops in it, anything that makes it particularly stand out to them. The public can be watching for these threads as well, the more eyes the better, the purpose of the Academy at this stage is simply to ensure there are always people actively looking for potential nominees in case the general public forgets to.

As Academy members, or anyone else, comes across one of these standout threads, they will pm the link to me so a running list is compiled. There wouldn’t be any discussion needed at this time because it’s not an official selection period, it’s just to make sure we get the threads in while they’re in our minds.
Every two or three months the Academy will hold a group discussion over the threads submitted so far to determine which ones stay in consideration and also to determine which category they each get sorted into.

Toward the end of the year the Academy will hold a special discussion to make the final cuts and officially determine the nominees for each category, a process resulting in a maximum of five threads per category which will be announced to the pubic. The Academy will then deliberate over the nominees for a couple weeks to determine the final winner in each category. The winners will be announced at a grand celebration, probably held in the ToO Chatroom.

So are the members of the Academy anonymous to the public?

No, they will be announced once they are all selected.

I thought of that, but the Academy doesn’t need a forum. They’ll only meet a few times a year.
