bizarre Wikipedia peculiarity
bizarre Wikipedia peculiarity
This is one of the strangest things I have ever heard, but it’s totally true; I tried it myself.
From any Wikipedia article, if you click on the first hyperlinked word that is not in italics or parenthesis, and continue to do so, you will always eventually end up on the article for Philosophy.
It’s so unbelievably weird!
(There are actually one or two articles this doesn’t work for, but I still say ‘any’ because two out of millions doesn’t really count for something like this. Also, I believe if one doesn’t work you do the second link instead and then return to using the first links and I’ve heard that still works.)
If you’re trying it, remember that you don’t necessarily click the first link on the page, but the first that is not italicized (such as in an article introduction) or in parenthesis (such as in a definition).
Example path:
Tank truck → Motor vehicle → Vehicle → Mobile → Physics → Natural Philosophy → Philosophical

That's absolutely bizarre. I tried it with 'Basil', and it worked.
"And the fire with all the strength it hath."
It actually makes sense, in a weird, bizarre way.
It's unbelievable that virtually every article eventually links to the same page, though.

That's not what's going on exactly. What this is showing is that by clicking through the articles you will eventually land on one that does link to it, not that every one links to it individually.T.S. (myself) wrote:It's unbelievable that virtually every article eventually links to the same page, though.
That part is common sense. With millions of articles of course you will eventually find a link in.
What makes this mind blowing is that they are always the first link in the article.
Well, there's the Wikipedia Game, where you try to get to a certain article, from a certain article, in a minimum amount of clicks.
It's essentially the same concept.
Basically, Philosophy is such a broad blanket, that there are thousands (if not millions) of articles that link to it, so eventually, you'll get there.
If you click any link that's not italic or in parenthesis (not just the first), you'll eventually get to Philosophy; try it yourself. The reason parenthesis and italic links don't work is because they are directly quoting/citing a specific, individual article (basically the difference between Nouns, and Proper Nouns, if that makes any sense), and Philosophy is fairly generic...
Like, if you put in "Bridge," you'll get the generic article on bridges, but you also will get articles on the London Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Cooper River Bridge, etc.
However, if you search for "Cooper River Bridge," it should send you directly to the Cooper River Bridge page, and you won't see the generic bridge page, because your search was specific.

They/Them
Not really. In that you just make your way from a specific A to a specific B by trying to determine where links would most likely be.~JCGJ~ wrote:Well, there's the Wikipedia Game, where you try to get to a certain article, from a certain article, in a minimum amount of clicks.

This is showing that there are links to one page from every other. And again, it’s all through only the first out of dozens or more links that could appear on any given page.
Of course you will; that is to be expected. As I said before, with millions of articles a random path will eventually get you there. What’s astounding here is not that you get there, but how you get there; that the path can always be found through the first link.~JCGJ~ wrote:If you click any link that's not italic or in parenthesis (not just the first), you'll eventually get to Philosophy

I've heard this, and while it's true like 99%, once I actually managed to get it to a place where I couldn't get to philosophy. I can't remember how, though.

Wow. Mine took forever, but finally got there. I went to the page on Lecrae, and the path was as follows:
That really is just bizarre.Lecrae → Christian hip hop → hip hop music → music genre → music → art → human behaviors → behavior → organism → biology → natural science → branches of science → social science → academic disciplines → knowledge → fact → proof (truth) → necessity and sufficiency → logic → reason → consciousness → subjectivity → philosophy

Mine took a long time as well, but it did eventually get there.
Rafael Nadal --> List of ATP number 1 ranked singles players --> ATP Rankings --> Association of Tennis Professionals --> Donald Dell --> Bethesda, Maryland --> Census-designated place --> Place (United States Census Bureau) --> United States Census Bureau --> Federal Statistical System of the United States --> Federal government of the United States --> Federation --> Political union --> Federated state --> Constitution --> State (polity) --> Political system --> System --> Set (mathematics) --> Mathematics --> Quantity --> Property (philosophy) --> Logic --> Reason --> Consciousness --> Subjectivity --> Philosophy

Wow. Mine's in reverse order and is kind of long, because I copied it from my history.

Mine took about 10 attempts, but Kirk Cameron also leads to philosophy.

Noodles takes a long time. I must have clicked through thirty pages.
Unicorns exist... they just got fat and now we call them rhinos.

I thought that was what I said. It must have been a poor choice of wording on my part.bookworm wrote:That's not what's going on exactly. It’s probably what you meant (that every page links to a page that eventually links to it) but what you said was that every page links directly to it itself.T.S. (myself) wrote:I thought that was what I said. It must have been a poor choice of wording on my part.

I know a few people who could use lessons in clarity, including myself. You would make a good instructor.
